USCIS Partnership Makes it Easier to Apply for an SSN

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced in August that a new partnership with the Social Security Administration (SSA) would make it easier to apply for a U.S. social security number (SSN). Specifically, individuals who are filing for lawful permanent resident (“green card”) status can now apply for an SSN at the same time as submitting their I-485 adjustment of status to permanent residence application to USCIS. This reduces the amount of paperwork and number of agencies an individual needs to work with and helps expedite the process. Previously, adjustment of status applicants had to visit a social security office in person to apply for an SSN.

The revised I-485 application form now includes a section to apply for a social security number or a replacement social security card. There is no additional cost for this service, and the change is effective immediately.
